Abstract:
This data set reflects fire intensity as measured by canopy scorch for the Rabbit Creek Fire within Boise National Forest, Idaho.
Purpose:
The data are intended to assist efforts surrounding broad-scale forest planning for analysis in fire-recovery: soil stabilization, reestablishing vegetation, and protection of other resources such as wildlife, riparian habitat, water quality, fisheries and timber. These data should be displayed and analyzed at scales appropriate for 1:24,000-scale data. No responsibility is assumed by the Boise National Forest GIS Staff in the use of these data.

Procedures_Used:
Field crews surveyed fire area (ground and air).  Islands < 40 acres usually not mapped.  Burn polygons drawn on paper copies 7 1/2 minute USGS topographical maps, then remanuscripted 1:24000 stable mylar.  Area mapped at 2 different intervals.  There was some overlap between data set.  Manuscript sets were digitized seperately and resulting coverages appended. Where discrepancies occurred, new polygons were created and attributed with the more severe burn intensity.  Digitized Arc-Info RMSE .003, clean weed 10.  Fire perimeter also collected with gps from a helicopter (wilderness portion not flown).  Perimeter collected with gps was used to modify field collected information.  "Burn polygons" outside the gps perimeter deleted from final burn intensity cover.  In general the perimeter derived from burn intensity mapping and the perimeter collected with gps agreed.

BI (burn intensity), relative estimate of fire intensity as measured by canopy scorch. Generally areas > 40 acres mapped.  Scorch canopy defined as fire killed needles and leaves that remain on trees or brush.

UB - canopy not scorched.
L - Low, < 50%. Canopy "green" with scattered scorched canopy areas.
M - 51-100%, usually > 75%. Canopy "red", scattered black, green areas.
H - 100%.  Canopy completely consumed.  Canopy black.

Description: This metadata is displayed using the FGDC Plus Stylesheet, which is an XSL template that can be used with ArcGIS software to display metadata. It displays metadata elements defined in the Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM) - aka FGDC Standard, the ESRI Profile of CSDGM, the Biological Data Profile of CSDGM, and the Shoreline Data Profile of CSDGM. CSDGM is the US Federal Metadata standard. The Federal Geographic Data Committee originally adopted the CSDGM in 1994 and revised it in 1998. According to Executive Order 12096 all Federal agencies are ordered to use this standard to document geospatial data created as of January, 1995. The standard is often referred to as the FGDC Metadata Standard and has been implemented beyond the federal level with State and local governments adopting the metadata standard as well. The Shoreline Data Profile addresses variability in the definition and mapping of shorelines by providing a standardized set of terms and data elements required to support metadata for shoreline and coastal data sets. The FGDC Plus Stylesheet includes the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set. It supports W3C DOM compatible browsers such as IE7, IE6, Netscape 7, and Mozilla Firefox. It is in the public domain and may be freely used, modified, and redistributed. It is provided "AS-IS" without warranty or technical support.
